Internet merupakan jaringan komputer yang dibentuk oleh Departemen Pertahanan Amerika Serikat di tahun 1969, melalui proyek ARPA yang disebut ARPANET (Advanced Research Project Agency Network), di mana mereka mendemonstrasikan bagaimana dengan hardware dan software komputer yang berbasis UNIX, kita bisa melakukan komunikasi dalam jarak yang tidak terhingga melalui saluran telepon. Proyek ARPANET merancang bentuk jaringan, kehandalan, seberapa besar informasi dapat dipindahkan, dan akhirnya semua standar yang mereka tentukan menjadi cikal bakal pembangunan protokol baru yang sekarang dikenal sebagai TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol).

Tujuan awal dibangunnya proyek itu adalah untuk keperluan militer. Pada saat itu Departemen Pertahanan Amerika Serikat (US Department of Defense) membuat sistem jaringan komputer yang tersebar dengan menghubungkan komputer di daerah-daerah vital untuk mengatasi masalah bila terjadi serangan nuklir dan untuk menghindari terjadinya informasi terpusat, yang apabila terjadi perang dapat mudah dihancurkan.

Pada mulanya ARPANET hanya menghubungkan 4 situs saja yaitu Stanford Research Institute, University of California, Santa Barbara, University of Utah, di mana mereka membentuk satu jaringan terpadu di tahun 1969, dan secara umum ARPANET diperkenalkan pada bulan Oktober 1972. Tidak lama kemudian proyek ini berkembang pesat di seluruh daerah, dan semua universitas di negara tersebut ingin bergabung, sehingga membuat ARPANET kesulitan untuk mengaturnya.

Oleh sebab itu ARPANET dipecah manjadi dua, yaitu "MILNET" untuk keperluan militer dan "ARPANET" baru yang lebih kecil untuk keperluan non-militer seperti, universitas-universitas. Gabungan kedua jaringan akhirnya dikenal dengan nama DARPA Internet, yang kemudian disederhanakan menjadi Internet.

Warning about the Collector's Edition...

First and foremost, about the show: I never had an interest in watching it until I started seeing the trailers for "The Last Airbender" live action film. To me the show just seemed soooo kiddie-looking. However, after doing some reseach and finding almost total critical praise and a huge fanbase encompessing boys girls, men and women, I thought I'd give it a try. Man, was I blown away. This is definitely a cartoon for the ages. While it is lighthearted, it also explores darker themes as the characters are slowly fleshed out. My wife and I, as well as my two daughters, were completely captivated. 5-stars without question.

For the Collector's Edition, if you've already purchased the previously-released Book I collection, you DO NOT need this edition. I repeat, you DO NOT NEED this edition. Inside the fancy box is a DVD with a 20-minute documentary that explores the origins of this series with its creators. Not a bad documentary, but not worth throwing an extra $30 on the counter. Also included in the set is a small booklet that shows some earlier sketches as well as commentary from the two creators. Again, nice, but not worth a re-purchase. And last, the previously-released BOOK I collection is what you're actually getting inside this box. They just took the old edition (box and all), put it inside another box along with a documentary and booklet, stamped LIMITED COLLECTOR'S EDITION on the box, and then jacked the price up $10-$15 dollars. The distributor is trying to take advantage of the up-coming movie. Don't be duped.

Master of four elements

Most western animation for children is, to put it simply, really wretched. At best, it's tolerable.

But a shining exception would be the tale of the Avatar of all four elements, and to restore the balance in the world. "Avatar The Last Airbender - Book 1" serves as a solid first season to this series, with its colourful world, vivid action and complex characters. It may be aimed at kids, but it's a solid enough series to be enjoyed by any age.

South Pole Water Tribe siblings Katara and Sokka stumble across a glowing iceberg, with a young Airbender boy named Aang (and his flying bison) sealed inside. All Airbenders were killed long ago by the Fire Nation -- and Aang is the Avatar who mysteriously vanished a century ago, and is the only hope against the Fire Nation.

Unfortunately, a Fire Nation prince named Zuko has been wandering the world in search of Aang, and agrees to let the Water Tribe alone if Aang surrenders. Katara and Sokka manage to rescue their friend, and since Katara isn't experienced enough in waterbending to teach Aang, they set out for the North Pole to find a waterbending master -- with Zuko and his cruel rival Admiral Zhao in hot pursuit.

Along the way, they encounter hurricanes, woman warriors, a loopy old king who seems very familiar, a Spirit World Beast, pirates, teenage rebels, two tribes locked in an eternal feud, a mysterious blue masked man, fortunetellers, a rogue Firebender, and an Air Temple turned into a steampunk city. But when they arrive at the north pole, Aang and his friends find that their time is running out...

The highest compliment I can pay "Avatar: The Last Airbender" is that it's like a thoroughly solid action/fantasy anime. It's graced with good writing, excellent animation, and a general look drawn from Asian and Inuit cultures -- not to mention different civilizations clashing against the steampunky armored tanks and ships of the Fire Nation.

That isn't to say that it's all grim and serious -- it's quite the opposite. Lots of amusing dialogue ("I'm too young to die!" "I'm not, but I still don't wanna!"), slapstick, and flashy fights involving eruptions of fire, swirling water and blasts of air. It all culminates in a brilliantly epic clash, which wraps up the season nicely while leaving the way open for Aang's next lessons.

Aang is a kind and selfless kid, but still a kid -- plenty of turmoil over his role as the Avatar and his past mistakes, but he's still down-to-earth and sometime spacey. Katara and Sokka make good companions -- a sensible, short-fused girl with waterbending powers, and her reckless, courageous brother. And though he's technically a villain, the scarred, exiled prince Zuko is a brilliant anti-hero. And his lovably pervy uncle Iroh makes for good comic relief ("I'm certain you bathe regularly"), but there are hints that he's much more than that.

The special edition is being released in time for the live-action adaptation, and it adds a sleek blue "book" case with silver detailing. There are going to be seven discs instead of the usual six, with extra stuff -- an exclusive documentary, a paperback companion for artwork and designs, and so on. This could be worth it if you're just discovering "Avatar," but I wouldn't advise buying it if you already have the regular "Book 1."

"Avatar The Last Airbender: The Complete Book 1" has a few initial wobbles, but quickly blossoms into a brilliant little show. Definitely worth seeing.

A Nicer Looking Repackage of Book 1

I wouldn't call this a true Collector's edition. Sure, there is an extra disc and a come-on to buy the Art of book, but the Book 1 collection itself is the same, they didn't even change the box. The nice looking box simply contains the original 6 disc release of the first season, in the original packaging. I was a little disappointed that the nicer box wasn't integrated a bit more. Like the Lord of the Rings Collector's Editions. I think something as simple as that would be really nice for this series.

In short, if you own the original 6 disc release, don't bother. But if you don't, the box looks great and it'll add some class to your DVD shelf.

The Greatest Show I' have ever had the Honor of Watching

Since the release of Avatar: The Last Airbender in February, 2005. I have been a die hard fan and a loyal viewer. This show for me has really surpassed all boundaries of story telling and is the greatest example of well done story in all aspects of story telling. With an awesome list of memorable characters and characters stories, an amazing world of true originality, having brilliant and original humor, also an original music, and memorizing battle animation and a massive world of captivating art, Avatar the Last Airbender has been my favorite show since it's release, and being a kids show on Nickelodeon, this is pretty amazing. I looked forward to every new episodes and loved the originality I saw every time. I had grown to love the characters and really enjoyed seeing their progression throughout the series. (Especially Zuko.) This show is just a masterpiece and this collectors edition of the series seems like it will be a treasure to have!

I can only hope they don't come out with a blue ray version as soon as this version has finished it's release. Lol.

I highly recommend this series to everyone. All my friends that I have introduced the series to have become obsessed ever since. I know that if this show would have been aired on Fox or a bigger network, it would have achieved so much more fandom. I can only hope the movie does it some justice, and I also eagerly await the art book coming out soon. Avatar: The Last Airbender (The Art of the Animated Series)

This show has really inspired me. As an artist and a writer, I really appreciate everything about it and I know if you watch it, you'll probably grow to love it as much as I have,so give it a chance. Definitely a great buy and I really look forward to this purchase.

I was really looking forward to getting this Collector's Edition and see what extras were added. I knew it wasn't a lot - just a mini-book and a documentary - but I figured it would be packaged in a cool way. Wrong. As others have already mentioned, the Collector's Edition is literally the Avatar: The Last Airbender - The Complete Book 1 Collection slipped into another cardboard box, with a little booklet and DVD in an envelope (not even a case!) wedged in. It's really disappointing; it would have been so easy to create a quality Collector's Edition but the studio couldn't be bothered, I guess.

This has been wonderful

When our 2nd kiddo started getting mobile, I knew it was time to kid-proof the great room. Problem is, our great room is just that - great, as in large. The doorways are wide, the floor space is large, and our very curious 9-month-old was eager to explore every nook and cranny. Our older daughter wasn't quite as curious at this stage, plus we were living in a different house at that time, so we were faced with a new challenge of creating a safe play area for the baby.

One day I had the idea of getting a play yard for the great room, instead of covering/blocking every single potential "hazard" (the entertainment cabinet, the CD tower, etc.). I ventured to Babies R Us and found this play yard and the extension kit (2 extra panels) and bought it. I set it up at home and have been happy with it ever since.

For awhile, I used it in its totally enclosed state, but the baby didn't like being separated from the rest of us. I tinkered with it and came up with a way to keep her out of trouble, while still allowing her access to us - right now, it's in a large arc shape with one end butting up against the couch, the other end butting up against a chair. She has plenty of room to play (I keep her toys in there with her) but she can't get out or get to any "dangerous" stuff in the great room.

As for looks, yeah, our great room isn't company-ready right now. But we have a 4 year old and a 10-month-old in the house, so the house isn't pristine anyway (my house is CLEAN, just not always NEAT...ha ha). I figure it's temporary, until she's old enough to know to not touch certain things. Besides, we don't have company, except for family, so the unattractive-ness of the play yard isn't an issue here. Even so, I'd gladly overlook the ugliness of it just for the convenience and benefits it provides.

When the time comes that we no longer have to use this for the kiddo, I'll probably hang onto it, either to offer up to friends/relatives someday, or to keep as a puppy play yard for the future.

What a CrOc!?

At first I didn't know what to make of this shoe/sandal... it's lightweight, comfortable and "convertible", which is a nice feature that I've never seen in a sandal before. First, I'll break down the benefits, then give the low-points.

"LIGHTWEIGHT & COMFORTABLE"
This is probably the most attractive feature of the CROC, because it adds to the comfort and makes you feel like you're walking on air. By far the most comfortable things I've ever worn and I'm a picky shoe person. I have only owned 1 pair of sandals for the past 6 years and have hated every other sandal I've tried on, so these CROCS are definitely special.

"CONVERTIBLE"
You can turn the "sandal" into a "shoe" simply by pushing forward the strap. In "shoe" mode, it's a tighter more snug fit, so you don't have to worry about it coming off your feet. In "sandal" mode, it's easy to slip on and off (although it has a tendency to cling to the bottom of your feet), for that quick trip outside to take out the trash, or pick up your cell phone that you left in the car.

PROBLEM: "SWEATY FEET"
One problem I have with the CROC is that it doesn't ventilate very well. Sure, it's got holes. But the material is such that it traps heat so you're feet end up sweating in warm weather.

PROBLEM: "HOLES ALLOW DEBRIS IN"
Another problem is that the holes allow all sorts of debris into the sandal while you're walking, such as loose rocks, wood chips at the playground, sand and dirt (when you're not at the beach), and rain water (puddles in the parking lot). This means that you're feet get dirty rather quickly and can be uncomfortable at places where there is a lot of debris - eg, playgrounds.

"SIZE & PRICE"
Sizing is a bit weird. I'd recommend going to a store first to try it on and see what size you are. It's hard to find a good selection at a store, so it's best just to dip in for sizing and then purchase the one you want on Amazon. Turned out to be the best thing for me, as I was able to score Army Green Caymans from Amazon, while searching at numerous stores I've only been able to find blue and black Caymans in sizes way too big. For $29.99 I think it's a bit pricey actually, but if you're picky about sandals like me, there's nothing you can do about it.

"STYLE"
One other thing you'll have to get used to is how aesthetically disgusting it is. Let's be frank: it's a damn ugly shoe and there's no way getting around it. It's not the prettiest thing to wear, but it's hands-down the most comfortable. Just be careful where you tread. Definitely not an all-terrain/purpose sandal. Good for beach and casual sidewalk/short trip walking.

"DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE BEACH AND CAYMAN STYLES"
None. Except that the sizes for Beach version are "ranges" and are more roomy for your feet. Cayman sizes are exact and are more narrow. Try on before you buy as the versions are not the same.

I love these things. My daughter (who's in the medical field)turned me on to these. She, as do I, has a need for arch support because they're so high. She also knew my arches has been falling due to age (I'm in my late forties)and I need inserts in my work shoes. She's been wearing her pair since last fall (2006) and picked me up some of the Croc "glides?" in March.

I liked them so much I ordered these Caymans for myself. Amazing support for "difficult" feet. I wear them whenever I'm not in my work shoes. I may look somewhat foolish (they're marketed at a much lower age bracket than myself), but I'm comfortable so I don't care.

I bought navy blue size 8 in mens because they didn't have size 10 navy blue womans and they fit perfect. The nice colors are hard to come by especially this time of year. Amazon was handy for that because they do the looking for you. I would definately buy these shoes if your looking for comfort and easy on and off shoes, they're great on uneven terrain. I have trouble wearing just about any shoe, and have spent a sizeable amount of money with Keens, Dansko's, Birks, you name it. These shoes are the answer to my prayers. They are light as a feather, fun and have a wide toebox and good arch support. Just bought them for my 65 year old mother and she hasn't taken them off. I wish everyone would wear these all the time so I could get away with wearing them for more formal occcasions like business meetings.
They're kind of funny looking so I intentionally buy them in outrageous colors so they're even more obvious! Yu can wear them with the strap forward like a clog or around the back of your heel. You can wear them with or without socks. You can wash them too. You will love these.

In recent months, I've developed severe neuropathy in my feet and legs. The pain, discomfort and other issues caused by this problem made it painful even wearing socks! Too cute

My son received this coupe for his 2nd birthday and I've been unable to get him out of it since then. The radio plays three short tunes, the blinkers (on the inside of the car) blink, and he has a horn. His favorite things, however, are the door and the steering wheel. The "floor board" slides forward if they want their feet up, or back if they want to "drive" themselves around. And, the handle extends to a nice height, even for tall parents, so you aren't forced to bend over in order to push them around. The only downside I see is the wheels are - as with a lot of push/pull toys - two pieces of plastic snapped together to form the wheel, so you can already see where much wear on them on outside surfaces would cause the wheels to crack in half. That is a downside, since, due to the nice handle in the back, it would be great to use outdoors when I go on walks, but I'm really afraid it will shorten the "life" of the toy.

very smooth jigsaw

I have had this saw for a few weeks now and am very happy with how smooth it cuts everything. I used it to trim off an overhang on a kitchen counter and it made a very smooth cut through both the laminate and particle board underneath. Also, I have used it to make some cut-outs in the plywood for a sub-floor and the cuts are very smooth. The blower works very well so that you can easily follow your cut line.This saw is rather heavy for a jigsaw but the weight helps to absorb any vibration. The price and weight are both high but if you want a smooth and powerful jigsaw take a look at this one.

Great Jig Saw

I am a carpenter and have tried many different jig saws before i purchased this one. (red, yellow, and gray to name a few) They either cut crooked, lacked power, or scratched the work surface with the bottom shoe.

In my opinion this is the best jig saw for the price. It easily compares to $300 models. I was a little skeptical of the precision control blade system guarnteeing absolute precision but was not disappointed. It's true to the line - every time. The dust blower actually works to keep debris from the cutting path and the removable overshoe protects the workpiece from scratches.It has plenty of power and maintains the speed you set it at. The extra long cord is nice too. Don't always need to get out an extension cord.

As far as the unit getting hot - I have run mine for 1 1/2 hrs almost constantly through hard maple and have never had a problem. This saw has it all!!!

My husband and I are not professionals -- just amateurs who greatly enjoy home improvement projects. I bought the Bosch 1590EVSK as a surprise, to replace our 30-year-old Honeywell. What a wonderful surprise it turned out to be! All the knowledgeable reviews posted here led me to expect a good tool, and I was especially pleased to buy a tool that's made in the U.S.A. The tool has far surpassed our expectations. Some reviewers have noted the tool's weight, and I have found that to be a special advantage -- it feels solid and substantial in the hands, increasing my confidence as I'm cutting, and its solidity and power seem to eliminate the kinds of problems I've had before, as with vibration or wavering spoiling my cuts -- as big as the Bosch is, it handles the most delicate, intricate work with ease and grace. As I've said, we're novices, not pros -- but this fine tool helps us do work that makes it LOOK like we had the pros in! I bought the accessory pack of 30 Bosch replacement blades at the same time -- the blades are of splendid quality. All in all, a wonderful investment, even for amateurs!

I have had a model 1587 and decided to try a new 1590, both do a better job than most jig saws. I went for the new 1590 because of the ease of blade changes and extra blade support. My 1587 cuts and works fine, but the 1590 has just improved blade changes,power and more stable cutting. I would recommend either one,but I would prefer the 1590 over the 1587.
As for the heating up mention by another review,I have had no such problem.

This is the best jigsaw out there. No question in my mind! Absolutely smooth cuts, in birch plywood, white oak, or anything else. No vibration. Easy blade changes and foot angle/bevel changes. Nice, long, soft cord, that doesn't twist your tool around. Be sure to get some Progressor Wood blades from Bosch too - they're amazing, especially when paired with this saw.
Shop around, though, if you want to save some bucks and get this shipped quicker - Coastaltool dot com, for instance...
